365 Project - Day 303 - "Abstract (The Leak)"

October 30, 2015 - "Abstract (The Leak)"

This is this.

This isn't something else.

This is this.

(This is my stockpot catching the water that suddenly started dripping from the ceiling right where the living room and dining room meet.)

This is this.

This isn't something else.

This. Is. This.

365 Project - Day 302 - "My Mailman Probably Hates Me"

October 29, 2015 - "My Mailman Probably Hates Me"

I've been selling things like crazy lately, so every single business day for the last few weeks my poor mailman has had to stop at my house to pick up packages. Sometimes it's only two or three. Today it's a half-dozen. I already have more to be picked up tomorrow.

Yep... I'm pretty sure my Mailman hates me by now.

365 Project - Day 300 - "Early Morning Moon"

October 27, 2015 - "Early Morning Moon"

It's very early...

It's very dark...

It's very cold...

... and the dog is taking forever to do her business.

Meanwhile the moon peeks out from behind the tops of the trees as it sets in the early-morning darkness.

365 Project - Day 299 - "Seventy-Five Cars"

October 26, 2015 - "Seventy-Five Cars"

Today I will be busy.

Busy photographing and listing for sale seventy-five NASCAR die-cast cars.

(More than 75, actually. Closer to 100 or more.)

A collection created over the course of a decade... approximately 99.44% of which consists of Dale Earnhardt Jr. race cars. They range from his very first races as a Rookie in the Winston Cup Series in the #8 Budweiser Chevrolet... to his move to Hendrick Motorsports and the #88 Amp Energy/National Guard Chevrolets.

Most are 1:24-scale cars. A few are smaller 1:43 or 1:64 scale cars. One is an incredibly detailed 1:16-scale car I'm having a bit of a hard time convincing myself to let go of. Each and every one of them has a story. Each and every one of them brings back a memory.

Yet life goes on. Collecting die-cast cars just doesn't interest me anymore... and except for a select few cars - such as Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s 1998 Daytona 500 Winning car - I just don't feel strong enough of an attachment to warrant holding on to them anymore. So they will go... and will be replaced by something else...

Maybe a baseball or photo autographed by Jacob deGrom...

Maybe another camera...

Maybe I'll order a half-dozen bottles of Westvleteren XII and enjoy every single sip of them...

Maybe I'll just buy another watch.

Yep. That last one seems most likely.

365 Project - Day 297 - "Abstract (Watch Band Holder)"

October 24, 2015 - "Abstract (Watch Band Holder)"

I'm freakin' exhausted today... and my mind is all sorts of blurry.

Can't think straight.

Can't stay focused.

Feeling kind of worn out.

Feeling kind of like I'm at the center of a maze, and so tired from trying to find my way through it that I end up just collapsing to the ground to sleep and recover before trying to tackle the journey again.

Yep. That's it... I think I need to go collapse on the couch and watch "Labyrinth" now.

365 Project - Day 296 - "Abstract (Jaxa)"

October 23, 2015 - "Abstract (Jaxa)"

Just a simple shot for today: A close-up of one of my Jaxa Wrenches, which are used to open the cases of waterproof watches with screw-down backing plates.

This particular Jaxa is an extra-large one... meant for those huge-ass 50mm (or larger) watches, like the Invicta watches my brother was so fond of.

A simple shot for a simple day.

365 Project - Day 295 - "National League Champions!"

October 22, 2015 - "National League Champions!"

With last night's win the Mets clinched the National League Championship and are on their way to the World Series!

Of course I'm hoping and praying that they will go all the way this year... but regardless of what the outcome will ultimately be, the Mets have made it to the World Series when so many people were telling me that there was no way that it was going to happen.

Not to take away from the amazing talent of this year's Mets lineup... but I can't help but feel that my brother Peter is somehow responsible for this, as he watches from Heaven!

365 Project - Day 294 - "Abstract (Leather Waves)"

October 21, 2015 - "Abstract (Leather Waves)"

Today has been spent photographing things to be sold and writing up and scheduling listings on eBay.

It has been a very "full" day... but now it's time to play!

So I grab my camera and start capturing objects from different perspectives. One of those objects is the black leather box for one of the Invicta Reserve watches I'm selling on eBay. The light reflecting off of the wave-like pattern on the box's lid catch my attention...

Focus. Snap. Capture.

October 18, 2015 - "Abstract (Dean College)"

Today we're at Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts for our daughter's audition for the Joan Phelps Palladino School of Dance...

... and while we nervously wait and wait and wait for auditions to come to a close, I find myself drawn to the shadow cast across the gray carpet by a red metal support post at the bottom of the stairs.

(I really hope she gets accepted!)

365 Project - Day 287 - "Non-Attachment"

October 14, 2015 - "Non-Attachment"

At 10PM Eastern tonight the listings for 39 items I've been attached to for many years will become active. This includes the statue of Buddha that is the subject of today's photo.

I'm considering this part of an ongoing "cleansing" - rather than an effort to achieve non-attachment. Actually, the list of objects I've become attached to has actually increased over the last six-and-a-half months.

In the last few weeks alone I've sold over a dozen formerly "important" objects - ranging from watches to electronics to limited edition concert posters to an original signed Salvador Dali lithograph. All had some sort of meaning to me and were tough to part with... Yet with each shipment I sent I also sent a bit of "weight" from my life. I let go of some bit of the past in an effort to create something new.

I can feel things shifting and changing in my life.

Time moves on... thoughts, beliefs and feelings change... and things that used to seem so important become less so... while things that hadn't been important at all become so.

(I believe they call this phenomenon "growth".)

And so I willingly step on the path with no idea where it might take me...

... but at least I'll always know what time it is.

365 Project - Day 286 - "The Trunk"

October 13, 2015 - "The Trunk"

A week or so ago my son came home from a walk, dragging this big blue beat-up footlocker. He found it on the side of the road and could not resist bringing it home with him.

So it has been sitting on our front porch ever since... doing nothing but sitting there... until today, when it posed for my camera.

365 Project - Day 283 - "Ballet (Preparing for College)"

October 10, 2015 - "Ballet (Preparing for College)"

My daughter is preparing for her first dance audition for college next weekend. Her plan is to major in dance... possibly minor in business... and some day open her own dance studio.

So today, following her ballet classes with the Connecticut Ballet Company, we're taking some quick photos of her in the studio to include in her application.

It's hard to believe. It feels like yesterday we were watching her very first dance recital. Now here we are 14+ years later and she's getting ready to audition for the Palladino School of Dance at Dean College in Massachusetts.

I'm so incredibly proud of her and all that she has already accomplished in life... but I'm left with one question: Where did the time go!?!

365 Project - Day 282 - "Self Portrait (39)"

October 09, 2015 - "Self Portrait (39)"

Gazing at myself in the early-morning hours of the final birthday of my thirties... wondering where all of the years have gone... thinking about the possibilities of the next 39 years.

(Then I put the camera down so I could get some coffee.)

Today will be spent in Manhattan.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art to stare at the Vincent van Gogh paintings and the Rodin sculptures...

Rudy's Bar & Grill for a few very-much-needed "Stimulus Packages" (look it up)...

Some wandering...

Noodles and Sapporo...

The train ride home...

... and a new watch, expected to be delivered before I return.

Tomorrow the journey towards 40 truly begins...

... but today...

... today I enjoy every moment of "39".

365 Project - Day 280 - "Make It Funky"

October 07, 2015 - "Make It Funky"

After doing a minimal amount of research and absolutely no calculations at all I've come to the conclusion that today is, in fact, a "James Brown and Maceo Parker" sort-of-day.

So these are just some of the albums that will be blasting in my house today.

365 Project - Day 279 - "MAIDEN!!! MAIDEN!!! MAIDEN!!! (The Freakin' Awesome Seats)"

October 06, 2015 - "MAIDEN!!! MAIDEN!!! MAIDEN!!! (The Freakin' Awesome Seats)"

12-noon to 12:05PM today. Those were the most frustrating five minutes I've experienced in a very long time.

Today at noon was the special "Fan Club Pre-sale" for tickets to Iron Maiden's concert at Madison Square Garden next March. Iron Maiden Fan Club members get to purchase their tickets a full four days before they go on sale to the general public.

I had everything ready by 11:45AM. I was logged in to my Ticketmaster account. I had the special pre-sale code already cut, waiting to be pasted when asked for. The payment method was already entered. I even had a printed out map of Madison Square Garden so I would be able to see exactly where the seats were before buying them... hoping to God (who happens to be a HUGE Iron Maiden fan, by-the-way) that I'd be able to get something in section 102, and if not there - something in sections 101 or 103.

The moment came... I entered the code at lightening-fast-speed... I selected "Best Available" and "Any Price" - then clicked "Search" and waited.

"No Seats Available"

I did it again...

"No Seats Available"

I did it yet again...

"No Seats Available"

I kept going. Finally it started giving me options...

Up at the top of Section 212. Nope... Search again...

Section 115. Nope... Search again...

Top row of section 209. Nope... Search again...

Top of Section 227. Nope... Not good enough... Search again...

Things slow down.

"We are experiencing heavy traffic. Please wait a moment and try again"

Wait a few seconds... Search again...

"No Seats Available"

Search again...

"No Seats Available"

Search again...

"No Seats Available"

Search again...

"No Seats Available"

(Starting to think that we're screwed... and will have to wait until the general sale on Saturday)

Search again...

"No Seats Available"

(About to give up.)

Search one last time...

Section 102 - Row 9

Click "BUY TICKETS"...

Enter final payment information before the timer goes off and the seats are lost...

Wait as the order is processed.

Double-check to make sure it's REALLY confirmed...

Yep... It's confirmed. Two tickets - Section 102 - Row 9

Do a little happy dance while sitting at my computer...

Text my brother a photo of the arena map to show him how freakin' awesome our seats are...

Immediately put on "The Book of Souls" and blast it in happiness!

365 Project - Day 278 - "Abstract (Anxiety)"

October 05, 2015 - "Abstract (Anxiety)"

This is what anxiety and depression looks like.

Well... this is what it looks like for me... today... anyway.

My anxiety level is so high right now that I have all of the blinds shut... the curtains closed... the doors and windows locked... the phone silenced...

I even hung a towel up to block the frosted glass window of the front door, so no one standing at the door could see the light of my computer or the outline of my movements as I sit and write this, ten feet or so away from the door.

One of the workers doing the sewer-line work outside our house came banging on the door - and it sent me into an absolute panic. I froze. I stood there like a statue, unable to move, for a good five minutes or so.

My cellphone starts buzzing with texts coming in... and again I panic... unable to look to see who they are from.

This is my day today. Taking a Xanax... sitting in a very dark house... making as little noise as possible... trying not to have to interact with anyone.

I wish that I could say my usual "Life is Good!" at the end of this post... but for me... today... I just can't.

365 Project - Day 277 - "Abstract (Priority Mail)"

October 04, 2015 - "Abstract (Priority Mail)"

I've been selling a lot of things lately. A lot of things. It seems as if the mailman has to come to my door to pick up an outgoing package every single day now... and I'm definitely NOT complaining about that!

Little-by-little I'm shipping off old, unwanted or unused memories - and using the profits to create new ones. It's a lovely thing indeed!

365 Project - Day 276 - "Abstract (Swiss Made)"

October 03, 2015 - "Abstract (Swiss Made)"

I'm not really feeling up to shooting today... so a quick shot will have to do. Since I started the day by posting a photo of around 40 watches to Facebook... I figured I'd end the day with a photo of just one.

So here it is.

(Now it's time for wine!)

365 Project - Day 275 - "Abstract (Protective Foam)"

October 02, 2015 - "Abstract (Protective Foam)"

This is part of the foam lining to one of the protective cases one of my watches arrived in. Five pounds of hard-case and foam to protect a watch that weighs mere ounces. So much protection for something so small and fragile.

That's sort of the way I've been feeling lately. I may be far from being "small"... and might not appear to be "fragile" - yet I can't help but feel that I need more foam around me, and a protective hard-case with secure latches.

Does that make any sense? I don't know. Maybe. Maybe not. That's all I've got today, though.

365 Project - Day 274 - "Time (Six Months)"

October 01, 2015 - "Time (Six Months)"

It has been six months.

Half of a year.

How the hell has it been six months already? I don't know where all of that time went. They say that "time flies when you're having fun" - but believe me, these last six months have been far from being "fun".

Six months.

It has been six months.

Half of a year.

The funny thing is not that it feels as if it was yesterday...

The funny thing is that I actually "feel" you in my life more now, than I did six months and one day ago.

You're definitely here. I can feel you. I can feel your influence and impact. You're there... in everything from my first thoughts and prayers each morning... to the way I'm looking at "life", "love" and "family"... to the fact that, thanks to you, I'm freakin' obsessed with watches now.

I'm clinging... and I know it. I don't know if it's YOU that I'm clinging to... or myself. Am I clinging to myself? Am I trying to collect as much "time" as I possibly can? Does THAT thought even make any sense?

I just don't know.

Six months.

It has been six freakin' months.

Half a year.

And I miss you now more than ever.
