365 Project - Day 102 - "Peter's Symbol"

April 12, 2015 - "Peter's Symbol"

Last night I had this tattoo done in memory of my brother Peter. I drew it up... and my brother Kenny did the tattooing.

This is Peter's symbol. It's made up of his three initials - PVP - and he used this as a signature on artwork and other things since at least the very early 1980s.

Early last year Peter was in the planning process for opening his own picture framing shop: "Peter's Art of Framing". He called me up one day and asked me if I could help him out with a business-related project. I, of course, said "Sure, bro! What do you need?". He asked me to draw up some sketches for a logo for the business... something incorporating his symbol and then the name of the business. I said that I would try, but that I wasn't sure if I'd be able to. I was having very bad tremors in my right hand that were preventing me from drawing or writing anymore.

Well... I tried to draw up the logo. Several times. I tried and I tried and I tried. I couldn't do it. My hand wouldn't let me. I felt absolutely awful when I had to call him to tell him that I couldn't do this for him. He understood why and told me not to worry about it.

Peter ended up coming up with a different logo, using picture frames instead of his symbol.

As for me, the tremor in my hand led to tests and more tests and more tests until it all landed at a diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease. Today I'm on medication for that... and the tremor is under control. I'm able to write and draw again... with only a little bit of a struggle. In fact, drawing up this tattoo was the first drawing I've done in a long, long time... and it felt so good to do it.

So here it is... the finished product... healing as I try to heal.

This one is for you, Bro!
