365 Project - Day 241 - "New York, I love you, but..."

August 29, 2010 - "New York, I love you, but..."

New York City.

Hot.

Making my way downtown... heading for Tompkins Square and the "Charlie Parker Jazz Festival".

Heading East on 23rd Street... toward Avenue A.

Pass Lexington...

and realize that today is "Moving-In Day" at SVA.

The sidewalk is lined with young "artists" and their parents... standing next to piles of "cool" Bed, Bath & Beyond dorm-room supplies.

There's a tent set-up for check-in...

There's music playing...

There are portfolios flashing...

And examples of art here and there.

Dozens and dozens of fresh-out-of-high-school "artists"... ready to take on the world. Thinking they've got it. Thinking they're going to be the very first person to hit Greenwich Village with pink/blue/green hair and an army-surplus messenger bag with witty saying written on it.

I'm bitter.

Twenty years ago I wanted "this" more than anything in the world.

Sixteen years ago I was planning to be part of the line-up.

I decided not to.

Now I find myself walking through the crowd here on this sidewalk... mumbling...

"Look! America's future unemployed!"

"The disillusioned artists of America!"

"Check your creativity at the door... you won't have it when you check out!"

Mumbling...

Bitter.

Wondering.

Having a very brief moment of what could possibly be "regret".

Then I feel the weight of my camera in my hand... and I smile to myself...

... knowingly.

And the LCD Soundsytem lyric comes to my mind...

"New York, I love you, but you're bringing me down."

(Life is good!)

Oh... wait... the photo: A view of the top of our Metro-North train as it waits for us to board on our way back home.
