"365 Project" - Day 98 - "The Smile"

April 08, 2010 - "The Smile"

I took a trip down to NYC today.

Checked out The 2010 Biennial at The Whitney...

Went to MoMA for the "Members Only Preview" of the Henri Cartier-Bresson exhibit.

Wandered around the East Village...

Sat in Tompkins Square Park for a while...

Went to the Life Café for an early dinner.

All-in-all, I had a wonderful day - all by my lonesome!

So what's with the photo, you ask?

Who is this guy? What the heck is he smiling about?

Well... here's your answer...

I believe it was his first time seeing "Starry Night" in person. He was already standing there when I arrived. I stood there for at least a half-hour or more. He was still there when I left.

He never said a word.

He never moved... even when someone stepped in front of him.

A few times, he put his hand over his mouth... and shook his head...

But even then he never stopped smiling. You could tell by his eyes...

Eyes constantly in that happy-smiling-squint...

... yet full of tears.

I'm not ashamed to tell you that I had tears in my eyes too.

I always get tears in my eyes when I stand there staring at that painting. My cheeks were soaked with tears during my first visit... a visit which lasted for hours.

Isn't it amazing how such a "simple" thing can have such an enormous effect on people?

and beautiful.

(Thank you Vincent!)

Thank you. I smiled and cried too.I mean now - reading this. And the first time I saw "Starry Night" in person too. It's the first piece of art I remember really resonating for me as a child. Still does. :)
